"HER CHINESE LORD."

WELLINGTON, March 13. "There are quite a number of white women jiving with such .men as accused in this neighborhood," remarked the inspector of police in the Magistrate's Court to-day in referring to aoasa in which a Chinaman named Geo Guie pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting Kathleen voji Cant. The woman had lived witTt' accused in Ha.ining Street for about three years and it was alleged that Gee Guie had savagely asaautaxl her. Inspector Hendry told the court that in most eases the white women who lived in Wellington's Oriental quarter were brutally treated by their alien lords and masters and the present case was a. sample. Tho unfortunate woman in court.was practically a slave to Gee Guie, who lived on her ill-gotten earnings and exercised over her his "right" as her Chinese lord to beat her. Detective Casiseis, who had 'noticed the woman's «ondition and subsequently laid a,n information against accused gavß him a very bad character. He was, he said, a Chinese "bludger"— one of the lowest order of men. —and he frequently ill-treated von Vant. Accused, who was defended >by Mr J. F. W. Dickson, admitted striking the woman but pleaded that being drunk at the *mie ho was out of his senses. The woman also gave evidence that "it wap nothing" and Geee Guie was very drunk. Mr D. G. A. Cooper. S.M., said that he was satisfied accused knew what he was doing at the time of the assault and imposed a fine of £5 with the alternative of a month's imnrisonment.
