OBITUARY.
T. 0. BISHOP; AGED 72. Mr Thomas Coat Bishop, who died at his residence, Balclutha, on Tuesday afternoon, June 3, at the ripe age of 72, had been a resident of this district for over half a century, having arrived in 1860. Born in Somersetshire, England, he, with his brother, James Coat Bishop, who died a year ago, came out to the colony in the ship "Chili," and chose the Clutha as their adopted honfe. For some yea» after his arrival he worked as a shepherd for Messrs Maitland (Hillend), Anderson (Stirling) and Redpath (Otanomomo), and after that took up a farm in Hillend, from which he retired about twenty years ago and settled in Balclutha. In 1866 Mr Bishop married Miss Frances Small), niece of the late Mr A. Smaill, Inchclutha, and four years ago he suffered the loss of his wife, who had ever been a loving and encouraging helpmate. The deceased was respected by all for his straightforwarcjness and integrity. Though not a man of big physique, he was unusually strong, and throughout his life enjoyed good health; he had only been bedridden a week with the complaint which resulted in his death — congestion of the lungs,—and on Tuesday afternoon he passed off quietly and peacefully. There was a family of nine —seven girls and two boys,—B«ven of whom survive to lament his death. They are Mr T. C. Bishop (Hillend), Mrs J. Hislop (North Balclutha), Mrs D. MeFinies (Dunedin), Mrs C. MePherson (Oamaru), Mrs W. Stiven £Waiwov:i), Miss Frances and Miss Christina Bishop, both of whom resided at Balclutha with their father. The funeral took place yesterday, the services at the graveside being conducted by Bev. & W, Currie.
