STOLEN MOTOR-CARS.
♦ £200,000 LOSSES IN FIVE YEARS. Expert gangs of thieves, acting in conjunction with dishonest motor-gar-age proprietors, are the subject of an appeal to the police and public by the insurance companies of New York, who have lost £200,000 duriiig the last five years as a result of the theft of motorcars. In the 12 months just ended these thieves have secured 101 cars in New York alone. The stolen cars, It is pointed out, are a great aid in fhe carrying out of crimes. Scarcely a tithe of the cars are ever recovered, as they are taken to garages from which they emerge a few days later so altered as to be unrecognisable by their owners. Tn response to an appeal from the insurance companies the police authorities have organised a census of motorcars in public garages, which the policemen must regularly visit.
