tho hardness of the paint may be overcome. White paint should hide the surface when three coats are applied for now work, or two coats for re-painting work. White lead, with not more than 55 per cent, of zinc oxide, and a moderate percentage of inert pigments, gives greater strength and other desirable features—a paint which will wear well and cover- well. Tinted paints cover better than white paints, and arc more serviceable. Semi-paste paints properly ground by machinery to such a condition that they may be easily broken up and tempered are more economical than hand-mixed paints. The majority of the paints sold by imputable dealers and made by reputable manufacturers in the United States are made from the best unseed oil and high-est-grade pigments obtainable, and are in a form ready to thin down with full oil or turpentine, either for priming work or for finishing coats. A better result can be obtained by a proper mixture of selected pigments than by the use of any one pigment in linseed oil. in the United States Navy, instead of straight white lead and oil, the specifications now call for white lead combined with upwards of 50 per cent, of zinc oxide.
