Kaitangata News.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHOOTING. The finals for the various trophies were fired for at the rifle range by competitors of the Kaitangata Defence Club on Wednesday afternoon and, despite the" high and tricky wind the shooters had to contend with, tho scoring was very satisfactory indeed, being as under: —

Vl. J)I3SI-l-l "- - "■ With each score is included the handicap shown alongside. The final was the fourth round fired, and the aggregates were taken from the three highest scores. Duncan and John Smaill participated only in Wednesday's firing. Stock and Smith, who tied, fired off for first place, with the result: Smith 18 points, Stock 17 points. For the colts Middlemass and Carson tied and fired off, with Middlemass 22 points, Carson 21 points. Smith carried off Mr Duthie's trophy, while the club's trophy goes to Stock. G. Middlemass wins Mr T. Johnstone's trophy, and W. I). Carson wins the club's trophy. ACCIDENT. On Tuesday last Mrs George McGhie, an elderly lady of 65 years, had the misfortune to fall and break her arm above the wrist. Mrs MeGhie, who but recently recovered after a very serious illness, was crossing from her kitchen door to the coal-house, trod upon a small piece of coal which, rolling underneath her foot, threw her off her balance and she fell, with the result as above stated. The injury was attended to by Dr Baird. BOWLING. A rink of our local bowlers have entered for the .New Zealand tournament to be held in Christ-church on Monday next. The rink consists of Wiu. McLaren, A. Middlemass, E. McFadyen and Harry Carson (skip). For the doubles the partners are McFadyen and McLaren. Carson and Middlemass. Each player lias also entered for the singles. THE MINES. The work of ringing off the portion of the No. 2 Kaitangata mine, which has temporarily stopped the developing of the new mine, has been commenced and will be eoutinued as the supply of rings come to hand. The company is also about to instal a new air compressor and engine in order to further augment the supply of compressed air for power purposes. This machinery arrived at the works at the beginning of the week, ami when installed should be able to meet the demand made upon it by the many winches and pumps working underground. GENERAL. The installation of officers of L.0.L., J'urple Star, No. 38, takes place to-night in the Masonic Hall, when several of the Grand Lodge officers will be in attendance. The installation of the officers of the L.L.0.L., Guiding Star, No. 12, also takes place this evening. The annual general meeting of the Kaitangata Miners' Union will be held tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock, and it is more than likely that there will be a good muster of members (also apologies for absence). I believe the fine for nonattendance rule is to be rigidly carried out, so the members had bettir take the hint and roll up.

Whether thoughtlessness or carelessness is the cause I know not, yet the fact remains that while a sale is carried on in Wilson 's'Hall the flag to draw people's attention to that quarter has for a day or two been flying at halfmast. A start has been made to erect the additional classroom at the Kaitangata school. The contractors for the work, Messrs G. and D. Middlemass, have the concrete foundations completed, and the woodwork is now beiug proceeded with.
