KAITANGATA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Territorials put in gix hours' practice, mostly at shooting practice, on Saturday. The lads thoroughly enjoyed the day's outing, treating it more as a picnic than anything else. To judge by the walking of some of our.brave defenders, a little training would not be out of place. Many of the lads seem to fancy that to march along in uniform with a roll like a sail : or after a long voyage is most becoming, but citizens comment very unfavourably on this sort of thing, and think less of our defence system J that allows suoh slovenly habits whilst wearing the King's uniform. Perhaps time will change things a little, and bring the raw recruit up to what is not only a useful but sprightly unit of our defence force. Mr A. Keyl had the misfortune to -lose one of his horses. In a trial of strength the railway engine fairly rode over the poor gee-gee. The Kaitangata Brass Band journeyed to Wangaloa on Sunday afternoon, and played a number of.sarted pieces. This visit was to keep faith with a promise made by the band at the time the Band Bazaar iwas held. A good number of Wangaloa residents were present, and thoroughly appreciated j the music supplied by the band, which, on account of the influenza epidemic, jwas without the attendance of several Jof its members. It is the intention of the band to pay another visit to the 1 same place early next year. A collecition was taken up and presented to the band, to add to their funds, or to Ibe used as the bandsmen thought fit. .The band rotunda . fund will be the richer in this case. | A young lad, whilst bathmg in. the baths on Sunday took cramp, and. but for timely help immediately renI dered would have drowned. The baths are in great demand now, and assist- ' anee in 'e'ases like the above is never I wanting, although, fortunately, this lis the first time any assistance has I been reqiuired at the new baHhs. The I Swimming Club's opening, caracal I takes place on Saturday, and, given good weather conditions, everything should go off with success. Tickets for the banquet to the Hon, J as. Allen, on Thursday, December sth,' are selling freely. The school committee meets to-night ' at 8 p.m. Borough Council meets to-morrow night at 7 p.m. Our. worthy Mayor (Mr Wm. Coulter*) is having a bad time of it through influenza, and is.still.very weak, and tinable to attend to any business, municipal or otherwise. The town clerk (Mr D. P. Clements) is almost steady i on his legs again after suffering from »n attack oj ''fine."
