SOUTH OTAGO FREEZING WORKS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l raise my hat to your correspondent, "Enthusiast for district's welfare." He hits the nail on the head in his remarks. Undoubtedly the 5.0.F.C0. is worthy the support not only of every f artaer but every shares holder in the district. I.have not yet seen the works but from what I hear a very good job has been made of them., The works, 1 understand, are the best of their kind in Australasia and a credit to the shareholders. It. is now up to us all to get right in behind our own concern and keep the flag flying. £29,000 of local money is; invested and every farmer in the district carries the responsibility of protecting this large amount of capital. This can only be done by doing our part in seeing to it that not a hoof goes past our works. Let me put it this way. The farmers all round have sheep and lambs to sell; up to the present wo have not been altogether satisfied with prices we have been receiving. We have organised and formed a freezing works of our own ; it is managed by us, we do our own killing and we find our own markets, and do our own selling. 'All this we have done for ouu cuture benefit. Of course, we have spent a little money in bringing this about, but in the long run this expenditure will be fully justified provided we do the right thing. As far as I am concerned every hoof of mine will go to the Finegand, and what is more if it is wanted I will take some more shares. We are not true to ourselves our district, nor to the people (who are not farmers but »ho have put their hands in their poekjets so liberally to support a concern the main object of which was to help to improve the price for our mutton) if, we do not now send our lambs to the" works. These shareholders derive no direct* benefit but they look to and trust us to stick loyally to the works and so

bring the concern to a dividend paying proposition, when they hope to receive interest on the money they putin it.

Again T would impress on my fellow farmers the fact that we would" not be getting the high prices that are now being offered to us if these works were 'not open. It is natural that we should be tempted to sell when a 1< : ■ price- than the market price is offered us, but I ask how long is anyone going to keep this up ? We might have to pay later for these high prices with big interest added. Are we going to be side tracked in this way and wake up some fine morning to find that the substantial works which wo have erected at great cost for competitive purposes are out of our control .and that we are back where we started ?—1 am etc., NO ! ! !. Kelso, 20/0/1012.
