At the Magistrate's Court at Christchurch recently an individual who was charged with riding a motor-cycle over a city crossing at an excessive speed delivered himself of a lengthy and eloquent speech in defence of his conduct. He affirmed that he was a stranger to the city and that he had been very much puzzled as to the meaning of the notices placed at the intersections of streets ordering drivers to walk over crossings. He said that he had not personally noticed drivers getting out of their vehicles and walking over the crossings, and he had been compelled to show his ignorance of the by-law by ridding across. Suib-Inspector MoGrath said ithat as he had been going at about 15 j-miles an hour lie had succeeded in showing his ignorance of the by-law pretty and the magistrate oat short a further oration by inflicting a fine of 5b and casta.
