VALEDICTORY.

On Tuesday afternoon the girls of the Balclutha District High School gave a very nice afternoon tea in the school cookery room on the occasion of the departure of Mr G. Robertson for his new position in the Dunedin Boys' High School. Inspector Robertson, the staff of the school, and some members of the school committee were also present. The room was decorated with weeping willows, no doubt intended to symbolise the feelings of the pupils on the departure of their respected teacher. The Rector, Mr McElrea, cm behalf of the pupils presented Mr Robertson with one of the best cricket bats and a sum of money with which to provide other mementos of Balclutha days. On behalf ol.thc staff he also £ resented Mr Robertson with a brief ag. Mr McElrea expressed the regret) of the pupils and of the staff at the loss of Mr Robertson, and commented on the excellent work he had done in both class-room and play ground. • Mr Robertson in his reply spoke of the pleasant time he had spent in the Balclutha school, and impressed on the' 1 ' pupils the importance of school games not only as a physical training, but as a training in self control and consideration for others.

Inspector Robertson also said a few words appropriate to the occasion, J and Mr Reid (chairman of the School' Committee) congratulated Mr Robertson on his promotion, but regretted that he. was leaving Belolutba,.
