FATAL ABSENT-MINDEDNESS.

'•Accidental death" was the vordiet at the inquest at Hattersca on John. Compton Clarke, aged. 29, optical turner, of Clapliain, who was killed by a tramway-ear on Clapliain Common. Clarke, his brother stated in Riving evidence, was a Sunday school teacher, and often pondered on Scripture lessons while walking in the street. A witness named Arthur Allen said he s*w Clarke step oil' the kerb apparently deep in thought and looking on the ground. A tramway-car approached at a moderate pace, and the driver shouted and rang his bell, but the man walked on and was knocked down.
