KAHUIKA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.), An important epoch has taken place in the history of this little back-block settlement. On Friday,., 14th inst, the telephone, which was started at Tautuku some months ago, and which has been worked inwards v>a Papatowai, Rimu, and Kahuika was connected with Houipapa, a distance of about 16 miles from Tautuku. The residents are greatly delighted over this, and a social and dance was given by the local school committee to the telephone men, in return for one they gave the residents here tome time ago. 1 understand that on Friday, night Messrs Jas. Harris and T. F, Johnston spoke to Mr Malcolm at Balclutha to thank him for his efforts, the fruits of which we now enjoy. Although we had a wet night for the. social, it was a perfect success. A short concert programme was gone through, the items being rendered entirely by local performers, and the dancing was started and kept up with songs, etc., between, until 7 o'clock. Mr Harris, chairman of the committee, took the' opportunity of saying a few worhs about the telephone, and Mr D. Bagshaw returned thanks on behalf of his men to the committee for the social tendered to them. When the dance broke up the ground was covered with about 3in of snow. The roads are now in a pretty bad state, though not near so toad as last winter, and very, little traffic is going on. On Friday, 21st inst, the school closes for six weeks' winter holidays.
