Mr Groom introduced a bill to provide for preferential voting. The Hon. G. 11. ]{i'i(l objected to (lie measure as a political manoeuvre to serve the immediate interests of the Government. Such an important alteration should not have boon sprung on the House just on tlit: eve of a general election. He had some sympathy with (he svstr-ni of preferential voting, hut condemned this method of dealing with it. The bill was read a first time. SYDNEY, August 21.
