THE DUNEDIN FORESHORE.

DUNEDIN, August 17

One of the largest and most enthusiastic public meetings held in Dunedin for many years came off to-night in His Majesty's theatre to consider the manner in which the Eaihvay Department had taken the most valuable portion of (he Harbor Board's endowments. The Mayor presided, and the Hon. T. Fergus explained the position, the following resolutions being passed : That the Harbor Board have clearly shown that the quantity of land taken for railway purposes without compensation forms a very large and valuable portion of tint Board's endowment, and that in (he opinion of this meeting it is equitable und right that the (Government should adequately recompense the Board for the loss of revenue resulting from the taking of such land.

That the closing of the city streets in order to give facilities ' for the working of railway traffic, the access of the city to the lands along the foreshore bein.fr cut off, has depreciated the value of the Board's endowments and much property of ratepayers, with consequent .serious ' loss of income by the Board and appreciable reduction in city rates.

That the serious reduction in the area of the Board's endowments by the Government violates the terms under which those endowments were originally granted for the ,purposc . of harbor -improvements, and not only depreciates the value of the "Board's securities, but also hampers the trade of the port in consequence of the Board being 'compelled, through the 'ess of revenue resulting from the taking of their lands, to impose heavy dut?s on goods and shipping. That the Government be requests to rearrange the requirements for railway purposes so as to leave for the use of the Harbor Board all the street frontages which are part of the Board's endowments, with the necessary depth for building purposes and, for the city, all street crossings which are required to give access to the foreshore, and that a deputation wait on the Government to urge the necessity of carrying out these resolutions.
