OBITUARY.

FREDERICK WILLIAM JAGKMAN. We have this week to record the death of of an old and jeppected resident of the Glenomaru District in the person of Frederick William Jack man. The late Mr Jackman has not enjoyed very good hea'th for a period of 18 months or so ; in fact ever since his wife died in June, 1901, he has been in failing health. The end, on Sunday evening, however, came somewhat suddenly. He had been residing with his daughter, Mrs Charles Latta, Owaka,and at about 8 o'clock,not feeling so well, his daughter suggested he should lie down. She went for her husband to assist him, but in the meantime Mr Jackman h'.d got up and gone into another room, and was in the best of spirts. While in the act of assisting him to lie down immediately after he expired. The late Mr Jackman was a native of Devonshire, England, and came to the Colony in 1862, coming to Glenomaru on his arrival. He had previously gone on a visit to America, where he resided for a few years. At Glenomaru be secured employment in connection with Begg's flour and sawmilling busioe?s. In a short time, however, he went into the sawmilling business on his own account, and, with various partners, has been more or less directly connected with the sawmilling business at Glenomaru ever since. Very shortly after he became settled in business for himself, Mr Jackman went home to England for bis wife, and the husband and wife and eldest daughter, the. late i Mrs A. Anderson,arrived together in the colony | about 1865, The two of them made a visit to England together in 1873: returning to the J colony again in 1875. The late Mr Jackman was widely known as a private resident and a business man. Thoroughly upright and

honourable in all his dealings, both public and private, he was held in universal respect by all with whom he came in contact. He was a man' whose word was his bond, and was neighbourly and obliging in all his actions. His death removes from the Glenomaru district one of its oldest and most respected landmarks.. His wife, as already stated, died some 18 months ago, and, in addition to Mrs Anderson, another daughter predeceased him. Besides his daughter, Mrs Chas. Latta, be is survived by two sons, Marcus and Fred, the former in business at Bomahapa, the latter a farmer at Glenomaru. The funeral takes place today, the place of interment being the Puerua Cemetery.
