RATANUI.

During the last few weeks we have had nothing but miserable winter weather, and some of the farmers .have not yet secured their crops, which are now very nearly rotten and growing in the stook. The roads are, I am sorry to say, in a terrible ytate with so much heavy' traffic and narrow tyres, which sink so far and cut up the soft road. Work seems pretty slack just now en the railway, as there is only one gang working, and no sign of an increase. Last Saturday night being the last of the month, the Ratanui Vigilance Oommiteee were to hold their monthly meeting, but I do not know the results. The dairy factory is still running, but the supply is so small that cheese is made only every alternate day. 1,, expect it will close down about the end of the month. Rabbits are very plentiful all over the district, but seem pretty scarce ■owing to the continual shooting from the small bore rifle very much in use here just now. Pigeons and kakas are pretty scarce this season, and one has to go further back to secure a bag of these fine birds. April 28th, 1902.
