PUKEPITO.
[From Our Own Correspondent.] 1 believe Pukepito and round about Hillend is about the most barren place, so far as news is concerned, of any district in the Colony, for there is but very little of public interest stirring amongst ns. Of course a correspondent might in the guise of news slip in an advertisement of hia business at the expensß of the proprietor of the paper or he might criticise the sayings or doings of some local body at a distance, such p.* the Education Board, for example. He might even conooct a cock and bull Mory about; a school committee not 500 miles from his own locality, declare it was told him by «om« who, howwr, failed to vouch for it» accuracy ; he might detail such i<tt'i#miugß a« facts to his readers. Ife would, however, be »uro to be found out sooner or later and then the question would be ( where are 'a ?.' A mw travelling merchant ha« started busings in tho district—Mr
Aitken, who I have no d«ubfr, will prove a convenience to many of our settlers. Messrs Begg Bros, finished shearing on Thursday last. They had very un* seasonable weather all tho time* It was bitterly cold, which must have been very severe on the newly shorn sheep. The crops are looking wonderfully well considering the cold weather we have hacl ever since the seed was sown. Messrs Begg hnve a large area under wheat, which is looking exceedingly well. Turnips are to be too late owing to the wet state of the ground. I have always found turnips to bo the best crop when ready for thinning about Christmas but they will not be thus far advanced this season. Mr W. Allen is erecting a dwelling house on the property he recently purchased from Mr Pillans. There are now fire' new homesteads in the district within twelve months. It is to he hoped the River Board w?ll hurry up with their new steamer. She will soon bo in request in this district.
