STANBIGG DUKE is a rich bay with black points, 16 hands 3 inches high, was foaled in 1889, and bred by Messrs William Black & Sons, Stanrigg, Airdrie, Scotland, and imported by Austin and Davidson, Temuka, in 1895. Sire, Young Duke of Hamilton (4122), by Duke of Hamilton (2074), by Prince of Wales (G73). Dam, Tibby (1016) by Prince Charlie (629). Grand-dam, a brown mare bred by John Millar, Loven, Gourock, and got by Captain (121). STANBIGG DUKE was got by Young Duke of Hamilton (4122), the Glasgow Premium Horse in 1887. His sire was Duke of Hamilton, so well-known as the 1000 guinea colt, which the late Mr Waddell of Inch, purchased at the Merryton Sale in 1878. Judy, the dam of Young Duke of Hamilton, gained first prize as a Brood Mare at Mid-Calder Show in 1880, and also obtained many honours before becoming the property of the late Mr Waddell, of Inch. Judy was sired by Mr Pollock's well-known breeding horse Young Lord Lyon (994). Young Bosie, the dam of Duke of Hamilton, was got by Young Sir Walter Scott (1031), and her dam was Drew's Old Bosie (85), by Lochfergus Champion (449). Tibby, the dam of Stanrigg Duke, is a Superior Brood Mare, got by M'Keau's noted Breeding Stallion Prince Charlie (629) a grandson of theldistinguished Breeding Stalliou Lochfergus Champion (449). Prince Charlie won the Ardrossan and Salcoats Premium in 1873. and his dam was got by the famous Old Victor (892), the. winner of the 2nd prize at the H. and A. Society's Show in 1864, besides numerous district premiums. Captain (121), the sire of the grand-dam of Stanrigg Dulcp, was bred by the late George Scott, of Barr, Largs ; got by famous Old Campie (119), the winner of the first prize and Gold Medal at the H. and A. S. Show at Kelso in 1863, also several other district premiums. Captain's dam was the famous old mare Jess, got by old Clyde (574), the grand-sire of General (322), the sire of the marvellous stock horse Prince of Wales (673) of world-wide fame. From his grand breeding on both sides and his excellent qualities, Stanrigg Duke cannot fail to render himself a valuable acquisition to breeders of first class stock,being descended from the best blood in Scotland on both sides,his stock as geldings selling in Scotland at two-year-old for 60 guineas and upwards, also in New Zealand 40 guineas being offered and refused for some of his one-year-old fillies.
