TEMPERANCE CONVENTION.
-* A largely attended Temperance Convention ' was held at Gore on Wednesday. There were about 70 delegates present, representing 32 societies, extending form Invercargill to Lumsden arid . from Tapanui to Balclutha. In addition, the Bey. W. Ready, Messrs A. S. Adams and F. Graham, of Dunedin, were present. The convention opened at 11 a.m., the principal business then undertaken being of a local nature. At the afternoon sitting Dr De Lautour, of Tapanui, read an able paper on " National Prohibition." His address occupied an hour during which he came in for frequnnt applause. Subsequently the following resolutions were passed : — " (1) That in the opinion of this convention it is desirable that the question of absolute prohibition of the manufacture, sale, and importation of all alcoholic liquors in the colony be relegated to the people for their decision. (2) That immediate steps should be taken to secure practical teaching on the physiological effects of alcoholic liquors in the public schools of the colony (3) That the present Liquor Act be amended so as to abolish the half clause. (4) That the people be given the right to determine for themselves, by a majority of the votes cast, whether or not the liquor traffic shall continue in the colony. (5) That the Government be asked to amend the Liquor Bill so that every description of be under the control of the committee elected by the people, and that the clause giving any two members of the committee power to grant conditional licenses by deleted. (6) That the Government be asked to take a plebiscite of the .whole colony re the will of the people with regard to the total prohibition of the importation, manufacture and sale of alcoholic liquors in the colony. (7) That copies of the motions be forwarded to the Southland M.H.R's. aiid the Government. * ' A monster soiree was held in the Town Hall in the evening.
