* CLUTHA v. CLINTON. Saturday last, the day fixed for the rptnrn match between the above two clubs, was very damp and cold and th< j Balclutha reserve was by no means in a fit state for fast or scientific football. The lateness of the hour, too, necessitated second spell being cut short by about 10 or 12 minutes/ Mr P. Bett acted as referee and his decisions were well received by both teams. Messrs C. Finn and J. Ritchie were the touch judges. Olutha kicked off and a scrum near the centre ended in their favor. A smart pass from a scrum ended in P. Mason getting away, but the referee, ruling a pass forward, called back r He, however, was not to he denied and another pass saw Finn transfer the leather to the Olutha three-quarter who scored near the touch line, Colin Seivwright kicking a splendid goal. Clutha still had their visitors down and I, Wyber got across, but, the ball having touched a spectator, the score was disallowed. Mason again got away from a pass forward and had grounded the ball before he was called back. A pass from some loose work let Paterson away well into Clutha territory, but Lattimer secured from the touch line and ran well up to the Clinton line where, after a lot of tight play, the forwards got over — Jim Wyber touching down in good position. Seivwright placed a neat goal. A kick by Davidson did not reach the touch line and Mason securing got over hut was knocked into touch -in -goal. The first spell ended without further score. The second spell was a series of tight scrums and loose dribbling forward work. The Clinton men, headed by Davidson, went near scoring at one time but Finn rslieved the pressure. The ball was shortly afterwards kicked over the Clinton line and Lattirner touched down — unfortunately for the home team an inch or two into touch-in-goal. The game ended with the scores — Clutha 10 points ; Clinton nil. After the match the visitors were entertained to dinner at the " Farmers' Arms." The health of the Clinton club was proposed by MrD. T. Fleming and replied to by Mr Davidson. After a little music and cheers being interchanged, the team left by the 8 o'clock train for home. There was no very bright individual play in the Clutha team, Mason was the pick of the backs. For Clinton, Clapp and Davidson were most conspicuous. The team only lacks combination to make it a very strong one and, should they go in for practise, will yet give a good account of themselves.
