Local and General.

* The influenza is making itself felt among members of Parliament. Three Ministers — Messrs Ward and Reeves andSir P. Buckley — are down with it, besides Messrs Allen, Green, Massey, and T. Mackenzie. It has .also made its appearance in the press gallery. A long and animated discussion took placß in the House on Tuesday afternoon regarding the appointment of a Captain Hannah, of Ballarat, who is related to the Premier by marriage, to the office of inspector of' fire-engines and plant. In the course of the discussion some very plain speaking was indulged in. For example Mr Earnshaw accused the | Piv'inier of bringing disgrace upon the LiWiwl party. As one who knew something of what he was talking about, ho regarded much of what the Premier said as "simple nonsense." H is reported that the hnlf on-the-roll clause is likely to be repealed in the Alcoholic Liquors Act, but that the threefifths majority for prohibition will be retained. News has been received in Perth from Southern Cross of a marvellous find of gold made by a party of Sydney prospectors near CoolgarcVe. They obtained 42800 aof gold from less than two tons of j stone, nun piece of quartz weighing 3001 b being sold for L2OOO. If the gold con- ! tin lies down as at. present for lOOfh ii will be worth L 1,000,000. This is said to be the richest patch oi gold utibarfched in any part of the world. The Woodville paper, which a few months ago was an out-and-out supporter of the present Government, now says that the Premier and Minister for Lands have proved notorious failures.
