KAIHIKU.

* [Fkoji Our Own Correspondent.] Mr Knott, temperance lecturer, gave a magic lantern entertainment in Kaihiku school on Monday evening, exhibiting a large number of limelight views of scenery and places throughout New Zealand, giving brief description of each. The principal part of the entertainment was a lecture on " Ten nights in a Bar," illustrated. Having, heard that this part of the programme was of a highly sensational nature, I was somewhat curious to witness it. It came up to my anticipations, and I congratulated myself on having left my children at home, The story itself, without the pictures, would, in my opinion, be savoury enough for old or young. The stabbing scene and the drunkard in delirium could only have been surpassed by the hanging scene, and I was surprised that was omitted. Fortunately we are not far enough advanced in prohibition to adorn our dwelling houses with such works of art. Many a youth, who witnesses " Ten Nights,' will be inquisitive to see what goes on at the " Bar," and parents will need to keep a sharp look out when passing hotels, lest they should lose the run of some of them. In country districts such as this, where beer and whisky and the drunkard are seldom or never seen, such exhibitions seem out of place, except as an occupation. The fear of hell is a questionable mode of luring people to heaven. The roads hero are at their worst, and might be greatly improved by having the fences cut to reasonable dimensions. In some places over-grown broom and gorse have only lett a- narrow track barely sufficient to allow the dray or buggy to pass. Surely this is somebody's business, and for the general comfort of the ratepayers ought to have some little attention. I suppose there is a rabbit inspector also, and would point out to him that large areas of gorse in various places in this riding are good breeding warrens, a visit to which might improve his knowledge of the "rhodent."
