♦ ■ — WEDNESDAY JUNE 27. In the Legislative Council — The address in reply was moved by the Hon Mr Kelly anel seconded by the Hon. Mr Bolt, and after two or three other Councillors had spoken the motion was carried. In the House of Representatives— The Hon. Mr Seddon explained that he accepted the motion of which Sir R. Stout had given notice as one of want of confidence, and that all other business would be postponed till Sir R. Stout's motion was called on. Sir It, Stout moved — " That a respectful address be presented to his Excellency the Governor praying him to appoint some eligible person to the position of Sergeant-at-Arms." Iv doing so he said the Premier had adopted his present attitude of a set purpose in order to compel him (Sir R, Stout) to declare himseff in opposition to the Ministry. He was not going to be influenced by a trick of that kind, and would proceed with his motion n order to assert the lights and privileges of the House. His motion was not one of want-of-confldence in the Government, no matter what the Premier chose to consider it. He then prceeded to deal with the motion. The Hon. Hr Seddon replied, anel after several members had spoken the motion was put and lost, the voting being 48 to 10. Mr Russell [(Riearton) resumed the debate on the address in reply, and was followed by Mr E. M. Smith, after which the motion was carried. Replying to questions the Hon. J. M'Kenzie said he intended to introduce' a bill this session in the direction of abolishing School Commissioners and appointing lands boards to administer Crown lands. — The Hon. Mr Reeves said it would depend on the course of public business whether an amended Hospitals and Charitable Aid Act would be brought down this session. The following bills were introduced ; — To repeal " The Contagious Diseases Act 1809," Property Law Consolidation Act Amendment Bill, Importation or Manufacture of Intoxicating Liquors Prohibition Bill, Lands for Settlement Act Amendment Bill, Dairy Industry Bill, Noxious Weeds Bill, Bill for the Extension of the Municipal Franchise, Auctioneers Act Amendment Bill, Public Works Bill. The Hon. Mr Seddon moved the second reading of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. He said the bill contained certain amendments that were required in the Electoral Act, and he desired to move the second reading in order that the bill might be sent in to the Statutes Revision Committee. — Agreed to. A number of bills were advanced a stage.
