WANGALOA.

[Fuom Oun Own Correspondent.]

Quite a gloom was cast over the district on Friday morning when it became known that Andrew Brown, second son of Mr James Brown, had died the previous night. On Thursday morning he went to the Kaitangata School apparently in his usual health. Some time in the afternoon, as far as I can gather, he felt unwell and came home. Mr Brown, seeing that there was something seriously wrong with the boy, at once sent for Dr Fitzgerald, who did all in his power' for the sufferer, but he rapidly succumbed. I believe inflammation was the cause of poor Andrew's death. It is a sad thing to see a fine young lad of his years cut down so soon — only 14 years of age. It is likewise a great blow to his father and brothers and sisters. Andrew was a fine quiet boy, and as promising a youth as you would meet with anywhere. He was a great favourite with his schoolmates. This was shown at the funeral, when a very large number' of them turned out to show their last tribute of respect towards their late schoolmate. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was attended by a very large concourse of people from all quarters. The Bey. Mr Fairmaid conducted the funeral service, which was a very impressive one. Andrew was quite sensible up to the very last, and told all who- were standing round his bedside that he was leaving them, and bade them all good-bye. He also sung three hymns he learned at the Sunday-school. Great sympathy is felt for Mr Brown and family in their sad affliction. "He is not dead but sleepeth." •
