At the Police Court here yesterday, MiFleming presiding, Samuel Banks was charged, on the information of Constable Christie, with having been guilty of (t) disorderly conduct in Clyde street on Wednesday afternoon, and (2) of having used obscene language in a public pluce on the same occasion. Accused pleaded guilty on both charges. Mr George Thomson gave evidence, from which it appeared accused had been guilty of extremely violent and disorderly conduct and of using very bad language towards him. Witness explained that accused was a poor man with a wife and young family to provide for. He therefore did not wish him fined or sent to gaol : he simply wanted him to behave towards hitr. for the future. The bench explained that accused by his conduct had rendered himself liable to imprisonment for twelre months. As, however, Mr Thomson had pleaded his cause he would simply be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called- If he behaved himself for the future he in all probability would not be called on, but if his disorderly conduct was renewed he would be brought up and sentenced to a term of imprisonment.
