It has cost £1700 to clear the trees on the Paris boulevards of the paper serpentines thrown on them from the windows at mid-lent. The clearing away of these flimsy ribbons, a correspondent says, has injured the buds. Nothing carl be prettier than a tree frashly covered with serpentines, particularly in a strong electric light. It then appears like a willow that might be of natural growth in ♦ Wonderland.' But after a few showers the effect becomes as ugly as it was lovely, and the trees look draggled, weather-stained and woe-begone. On the whole the innovation during the carnival and mid-lent of confetti and serpentines has far greater drawbacks than advantages.
