The Clutha Leader. BALCLUTHA: FRIDAY, MAY 25, 1894.

An entertainment under the auspices of the itomahapa Social Club will be held this evening. The ordinary monthly meeting of the C'lutha County Council will be held here this afternoon. Yesterday being the Queen's birthday was observed a close holiday at all the business places in Balelutha. Mr John Pat-ereon, representing the New Zealand Clothing Factory, visits Ovvaka on Wednesday next. The football match Clutha v. Clinton, played at Clinton yesterday, resulted in a win for Clutha by 6 points to 3, Black and Tyson scoring for the loc.il men and Vausioni for Clinton . Mouowai with the San Francisco mail on board arrived at Auckland on Wednesday after a record passage oc 18 days 9 hours from San Francisco. It is claimed that she has delivered the inward English mail between London and New Zealand in the fastest time accomplished by any route. His Excellency the Governor has appointed Mr Hull, Inspector of Stock. Balclulha, to be an agent to appear and act for Her Majesty in all suits in the Magistrate's Courb for the recovery of rates or suras of money in the nature thereof, payable to Her Majesty undor "The Stock Act 1893." The Hon. the Premier will arrive in Dunedin from Palmerston by an early traiD this morning and will proceed by special train at 10.5 to Hyde, where he wiJl open the section of the Otngo Central railway from the Rock and Pillar station to Hyde. This is an extension of 8 miles from the point to which the railway was recently opened by the Minister for Lands. It is expected Mr Sedtlon will remain in Dunndin for a few days' 5^ Ifc will be noticed with regret all over ! the district that our obituiry list this week is a heavy one, containing, as it does, the name 3of some of the most honored and respected connecting links between the present and the earliest days of Otngo. The way in which our old identities are gradually passing away forms one of the saddest incidents of colonial life, and the chronicling of them always forms one of our most painful duties. Mr Farnie, of the Dunndin Labour department, returned from Catlins on Saturday. While there he met the unemployed, who had been previously apprised of his coming. There were 23 men assembled, 10 or II of whom were single men, who in all probability will be put upon the bushfelling work on the improved settlement farms. Mr Farnie, with the assistance of Constable Christie, selected 12 married men with large families for the further extension of the Catlins line of railway. A few more have since been selected so as to make about 50 men &t work on the line, and aa there are only about two more miles of formation to com piece, it is expected that the earthworks will be finished to Vial's Hotel in the course of pine or ten mouths,

We regret to learn that Mr Alexander Robertson, farmer, Waitepekn, met with a somewhat serious accident on Thursday evenin s last we k. While driving home from Balclutha he had to call at Mr Someryille's store anfl turning the corner too sharp, the buggy wag overturned, Mr Robertson being thrown heavily to the ground and being considerably cut aud bruised about the head and face, but no serious consequences are anticipated. . At the meeting of the Land Board on "Wednesday the Chief Surveyor forwarded an application from John Thomson for section 15 block 2, Catlins, arranged to be granted to M r Thomson in exchange for road through section 5 of the same block.— To.be allowed to aquire under section 114 of Act at 20s per acre. — R. C. Boyes applied* for the grazing right over sections 48, 49, 61, block 10, Ppmahnka Estate.— Declined.— W. J. A. Harrington wrote in regard to section 17,.b10ckI 7 ,. block 7, Woodland, held by him under occupation, with right of purchase.— Kef erred to Clutha County Council for cosideration. The usual meeting of the Balclutha Literar;. Society was held on Wednesday eveni»g last, when Mr Joseph read an interesting paper entitled "New Zealand under ice." The first part consisted of an appreciative account of New Zealand scenery, aud the second part described the. supposed geological cause, especially in connection with the glacial theory. The paper was criticised by Mr Valentine, 8.A., Mr T. Mackenzie, M. H. Li. (who advocated a different theory from that taken up by Mr Joseph) and the Rev. S. W. Currie. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday evening next, when a debate will take place on "Party Government," Mr J. W. Wilson taking the affirmative and Mr J. Crawford Anders'oV-the negative. This should be an interesting meeting. Our Ratauui Correspondent writes : — A concert and dance in aid of the library funds was held in Dewar's barn an Friday evening the 18th insfc. Mrs Henderson's songs " Drifting" and " Sweet dreamland faces " were beautifully sung, Mr Henderson accompaning her on the violin. Mr Burton sang "'A. flower from my mother's grave ;" and Mr Warnock gave a comic song, which was very well received. Then the curtain rose on our local " Darkie Troop,'' whose songs and jokes, though none of the latest were evidently well appreciated by their not too critical audience, A laughable farce concluded the entertainment, Mr Carlton then proposed a hearty vote of thanks to those who had so kindly given their services, which was responded to by Mr Gow, who proposed a vote of thanks to the chairman, Mr Carlton, which was heartily responded to. The barn was then cleared for the dance, which was kept up with great spirit til! 5 o'clock. Mr Warnock being M.C., and. the music was supplied by Messrs Henderson, Calder, and Draper.
