BALMORAL ROAD BOARD.

+ A meeting of the Balmoral Road Board was held at Hillend Station on Saturday. There were present — Messrs James Smith (chairman), John M. Begg, John M. Smith, Thos. A. Johnatone, and W. S. Fillans. The returning officer reported that Messrs James Smith, William Smith, and John M. Smith had been re-elected members for the Waitahuna West sub-division. Mr Begg moved, and Mr Johnston seconded — " That James Smith be elected chairman for the ensuing year." — Agreed to. The Auditor's report on balance-sheet was read. Mr J. M. Smith moved, and Mr Begq seconded — " That the balance-sheet be adopted, and that the chairman sign the bnlance-sheet as required by the Act." — j Agreed to. ' A petition was read from ratepayers in | Waitahuna West asking the board to advertise in the Witness or Tuapeka Times as) they never see any of the board advertisements to know when the meet- 1 ings were held. — Referred to the chairman to reply to the petition. — Seconded ' by Mr Begg and agreed to. A letter was read from Mr James King stating that the formation of road past his property was not on the road line. — Read. W. Willocks wrote asking the board to make a deviation of road through section 2 of 26, block I, Hillend, to give him access to his property. — Mr W. S. Pillans moTed, and Mr J. M. Smith seconded — " That the board apree to carry out the exchange of road, Mr Willocks to pay all the expense of si-me, including fencing." Agreed to. Several letters were read from Mr Johnston with reference to a portion of road formation on road to Arnold Bros', and the inspector reported that the work had been done at schedule price under "Wilßon Bros.' contract. The inspector also reported that the works on hand were all finished. He also reported that the road grader had been working on road leading to Mr R. Paterson's, and the road had been formed as far as Mr Paterßon wanted it in the meantime. Mr Pillana moved, and J, M. Smith seconded — "That a ditch be cut, and a culvert be put in the soft piece of road through Mr Geo. Moore's property." — Agreed to. A letter was read from Mr Pillans re title for stopped road lines, and from his solicitors on the same question. — The Chairman said it would be necessary to make up a statement of the roads stopped and those given in exchange, and fix the yalne of those that Mr Pillans would get in excess of those given. ' Mr J. M. Begg had been appointed to make the valuation and arrange with Mr Pillans, and it would be necessary for him to place a value on the roads to be exchanged before anything further could be done in the matter. A letter was read from Messrs Kenycn and Hoskings enclosing a cheque for LB9 9» 3d, being the purchase money for stopped road through Manuka Island estate. — Received. Mr John M. Smith moved, and Mr Johnston seconded — "That the surfacemen be put on to fill up the ruts on hill rising from Manuka Island station, and portion of road near plantation opposite JFnwer'a section. — Agreed to.

The Chairman reported that the following accounts had been paid since last meeting : — W. Wilkinson , LSO ; Wilson Bros. , L 25 ; Bruce Herald, Ll 15s ; M. Stewart, L4loa. — Action confirmed. An account from Cltjtha Leader was also passed for payment amounting to L 5 6a. A letter was read from the secretary Land Board enclosing plans for the board to mark on the positions of the proposed works under the thirda and fourths land revenue. — Mr Johnston moved, and Mr J. M. Begg seconded—" That the Chairman be authorised to mark the position of the works on the plans and return same to the Land Board." — Agreed to. The committee reported that the following tenders had been accepted :—Contract No. 15, William Wilkinson, L 92 5a ; Contract No. 16, Wilson Bros., L 29 Us 4d ; contract No. 17, John Tough, Lls, — Action confirmed. The meeting then closed.
