OWAKA.
[From Our Own Correspondent.! A distressing accident has occurred to. Mr G. Scott, of Taukupu, by which his hand was nearly severed from his arm, while in the act of cutting bush. He went to Dunedin to got it attended to and it is to be hoped he will not lose it altogether. Settlers of his stamp want both hands for the "work they have to undertake. Great sympathy is felt for him throughout the district. We have news at last that the Government intend doing something in the shape of bringing the railway through to Owaka. I hear all men in the district wanting work are to be placed on the railway right away, which, along with the road work to be undertaken, should relieve the labour market in this district and make it better for all hands. The football team to go to Caversham will be the same as picked last week ; they are certainly not expected to win, but I hope to see them making a good fight of it. The Pj-esbyterian choir are to give the service of song " Uncle Tom" at Ahuriri on Tuesday evening. With a fine night they should have a big muster to hear them, as they are well worth listening to.
