The Clutha Leader. BALCLUTHA: FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1894.

We publish in another column some correspondence that has passed between, the Premier and Mr T. Mackenzie, M. H.R., with refp-nnce to the Catlins line of railway. From this it will- be seen that the Government has now decided to complete the earthwork formation to the Owaka Valley Quakerneld. This decision will be gratefully received by all in the Catlins district who are desirous'of obtaining employment at this class of work during the winter months. It will also be cheering news to the numerous settlors in the district who took up bush sections and made homes for themselves and families there on the understanding that they would shortly be provided with railway communication to enable them to get their produce conveyed to market, and to afford them the many conveniences which l'ailways can alone supply. There now is every prospect that their hopfisin this respect will shortly be realised. For so soon as the earthwork is completed the plate-laying will no doubt be put in hand with the least possible delay, so that some return may be got for the large, amount of money expended. The completion of this railway has been protracted beyond all reason, but past annoyances and disappointments will now merge into gratification with the prospect of the early realisation of long cherished hopes.
