KAITANGATA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

* The annual soiree of the Kaitangata Presbyterian Church was held on Wednesday evening last in M'Govern's Hall. Despite the severe inclemency of the weather the hall was well filled with adults on the occasion. •The management decided on a new departure 'this time in the shape of hay.ing a separate night for the children. The result has fully proved the wisdom of this step. A strong choir, under the able leadership of Mr George Aitehison, rendered several selections in a very creditable manner, while quartettes, duets, and solos were given with taste and precision by various members of it. Miss "Nicholson efficiently presided at the organ. The treasurer's report, which was read by Mr John Johnstone, showed that the financial condition of the church was good considering the large outlay for buildings and repairs and alterations which had been effected. Just a little extra united effort would soon remove the whole liability, and leave the church "free of debt. The Chairman (Eev. E. Fairmaid) submitted the session report on the work carried on during the year. Several additions had

I been made to the membership. The various organizations of the congregation had been doing their respective work in a hearty manner. He mentioned that the retiring members of committee for the year were Messrs Alex. Blackie, A. Smaill, and J. Welsh', sen., all of whom had done their work faithfully. Special mention was made of the excellent and lengthened service Mr Welsh had rendered as church treasurer. The Chairman urged the duty of cultivating a Christ-like spirit, arid making individual effort in order to success in the advancement, of the kingdom of Christ in community. ■ Humorous, able, and pointed addresses were delivered by the Eev. Messrs Allen. Jory (Wesleyan), Kilpatrick, andheartily received. Abundance of refreshments sent in by members and friends of the congregation were handed round during the evening by a large number of lady and gentlemen willing waiters. A comprehensive vote of thanks to speakers, choir, and ladies, who supplied the provisions, and all others who had. helped to the success of the meeting was moved by Mr J. Nicholson and seconded by. Mr W. M. Shore. Mr Kilpatrick opened the proceedings I with prayer and Mr Allen pronounced the benediction. The children's meeting was held last evening and proved very successful. After refreshments had been handed round a large number of lantern views, including several of a humorous kind were exhibited. The lantern was manipulated in a£ skilful manner by Mr Urquhart, ' watchmaker, and the accompanying lecture entitled '• Around the world in 70 minutes " was read by 'Eev. E. Pairmaid. Proceedings were opened and closed with praise and prayer.
