OWAKA.

«. -_ I [FROM OUR OWN COBKESI'ONDJJNT. | The weather has been a succession of gales, each one trying to outdo the other, but Sunday picked np a little, so it is to be hoped we are in for a week or two of fine weather, and which will allow the threshing to get pretty well put through. Mr Tulloch's mill started at Reay's to-day, and is giving every satisfaction. The result came out beyond expectations, as it yielded 928 bushels to 17 acres — averaging about 55 bushels. . If this happens all through " cockatoos " cannot grumble. The harvest festival service was held at the Presbyterian Church last Sunday evening, the preacher being the Eev. W. G. M'.Laren. Solos were very sweetly rendered by Mrs M. Latta and Mrs M'Lean. The Vigilance Committee are holding a meeting to consider re the railway, and it is to be hoped they will be able to shew the Government the importance of the work and the necessity of getting it clone right away, and not let them dally at the old rate of speed. Seventeen miles in 17 years is a good record and a credit to the Colony! The adjourned meeting will be held on Wednesday evening next at 7.30 at Vial's hotel. Last Saturday being wet the football match did not come off, but a friendly game was played, about 12 a side taking part, and a very good game ensued, good play being shewn on both sides. Next Saturday the match will come off at 3 p.m. The bachelors' ball came off at Upper Owaka, but the bad -weather kept a good many away. Those who went enjoyed trlemselves A.I, and the bachelors deserve a vote of thanks for the enjoyment provided.
