OWAKA.

«. [from oun OWN correspondent. I Now that harvest is over and men are beginning to walk about again, it is surely time the railway works were started in full swing ancl get it finished ready for next summer's traffic. There will be a number of unemployed here this winter, and it will rest with tlie Government to give them a hand. The work has to be done, and it will be abenefit to all that it should be done now ; the sooner finished the better. If some were started in the swamp before it gets too wet I think it would be a wise move. The engineer in charge shonld certainly move in the mattor and get it properly under way. When can our Chief Surveyor be persuaded to start the road through Brown's property ? He seems to have a big say in the matter, and the sooner he starts men on the job the better for all concerned. I am toid next season's milk supply to the factory would be largely increased if the road was put through. That being so if the Government wish to help the settlers let them start at once, and do one good turn. I am glad to see the council looking to the roads aud preparing them for the incoming winter, as they want all they can get. The fine weather is still prevailing, which is a blessing. I notice they are busy putting up a bell at the English Church, which, I understand, is a gift from Mr John Craig. Tho bachelors of Upper Owaka are giving a dance on the 13th inst. in Mr M'Kinnon's barn. If they have a good night there should be a big muster. .-vWhy do not the bachelors of Lower Owaka follow suit ? Owaka v. Batanui football match comes off on Saturday week, and some veterans have promised to play on both sides. Owaka, April 4.
