BALCLUTHA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

The monthly meeting of the Balclutha District High School Committee was held on Monday evening. There were presentMessrs Dunne (chairman), Paterson, Wood, Mason, Shiels, Wright, and Fleming. The head master reported the attendance for the past quarter : On roll at beginning, 252 ; at end, 259 ; average attendance, 210 ; working attendance, 213. The following correspondence, which was read, explains itself : — The Secretary, Otago Education Board, Dunedin. Dear Sir, — Instructed by the Balclutha District High School Committee, I write to ask your board as to the present position of the High School with reference to the arrangement entered into in October 1891 /;; re the head master, the two years referred to hay,' expired. — I am, &c, D, T. Fleming, Clerk. Balclutha, March 7, 1894. Mr D. T. Fleming, Clerk School Committee, Balclutha. Sir, — I have to inform you that your letter of date 7th inst., regarding the position of the Balclutha School as a district high school and Mr Pope's position as head teacher thereof, was laid before the Education Board at its meeting to-day, when it was decided to postpone consideration of the whole matter until the inspectors couid furnish a report thereupon. The matter will probably be dealt with at next meeting. P. G. Pryde, Secretary. Dunedin, March 14, 1594. — Mr Paterson failed to see any necessity for the board referring the matter to the inspectors. The period of the arrangement between the committee and the board had now lapsed. —The Chairman ruled Mr Paterson out of order, but the latter protested that he was perfectly in order, and expressed his readiness to abide by the vote of the committee, to which the Chairman retorted that it was he who had the control of the meeting. A some- • what lively exchange of ideas ensued, Mr Paterson eventually saying that if he were i not allowed to express his views on the subject of the high school he would take another opportunity of doing so. — Messrs Wood and Mason regretted that the board did not deal with the matter independently of the inspectors seeing a definite arrangement ; had been entered into. — The Chairman said ' the board evidently intended to deal with the matter at next meeting, and the committee should not take any further steps at the stage. — Messrs] Shiels and Fleming did , not know that anything further could be done till a definite answer was received from the board,— The subject ■■ which had created a somewhat animated discussion in a conversational style, was then ', allowed to drop. . The Education Board advised the payment of the last quarter's allowance (L 10) into the committee's bank account, and asked the balance-sheet to be forwarded as soon after March 31 as possible. — The clerk reported 1 that he had paid all accounts up to March : 31 and forwarded balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of 2s.

• ) H. Rose's account, Ll 16s to March 31, which had heen paid, was formally passed, also G. D. Stewart's, 4s 6d,
