The gendarmes surrounded a convent in Warsaw and surprised a number of Nihilists in the act of manufacturing dynamite bombs. After a severe fight, in which two gendarmes and three Nihilists were shot, the inmates of the building were arrested. -

A serious accident happened at Godalming,in Surry. Five hundred pupils of Charter House School were assembled for the purpose of being photographed when the platform on which they were arranged suddenly collapsed. Thirty persons were injured, but it is hoped no fatal results will ensue.

On Tuesday the New York police raided an Italian gambling den. The gamblers wen; pressnt in large numbers, and, being armed with revolvers and knives, resisted desperately. The result was a severe conflict, in which 19 foreigners were wounded — three seriously ; but so far as is known none of the cases resulted fatally. The raid was very successfully carried out, and upwards of6o of those who were playing in the rooms were arrested and conducted to the police barracks.
