* It will bo remembered that a good deal of surprise was -at the tirrte- expressed at the Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company parting with; its Dun* edin manager, Mi 4 Donald Stronach, and that various causes were assigned by tho public as accounting for the company dis* pen3ing with tho serviced of an old and valued servant like Mr Stronachv M* Battley ,_ the company V inspector, being on a visit to Dunedin at the present time, and having learned that rumours detri-, mental to Mr Stronach had been circu* luted, has sent that gentleman a letter, of which the following 13. a Dopy, an# which we have been. asked to publish ; — . " Dear Sir, — Referring to my conversa* tion with you to-day, having heard lot. the first time that there have been rumours reflecting upon you in connection . with your retirement from the company, I hasten to record that during your whole service, your conduct in relation alike to the company and its clients was thoroughly honourable, and there ia no justification fjr any such rumours.— Yours truly, " Fkedic.
