BALCLUTHA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the above committee was held on Monday evening, when the members present were-— Mrs Ayson, and Messrs Mason (chairman pro. tern.), Wood, and Fleming. The secretary Education Board wrote saying that the board had decided to comply with the request of 'the committee for the erection of new closets. — Received. " The board also wrote drawing attention to the stiffness of several of the school , windows and the dilapidated condition of the 'school fence, and adding that the board trusted that, as it had agreed to provide new outhouses, the t committee would give this matter attention.—Received. - The head teacher reported as follows • ; — " I have the honoar to report the attendance for the past quarter as follows ; Number on roll at beginning of quarter, 254 ; number on roll at end of quarter, 275 ; average attendance for quarter, 220 ; largest attendance on any half-day during the quarter, 241. . "I beg to draw your attention to the following : — (1) Some of the windows have been stuck ever since the school was last painted, they will move neither ap nor down. (2) Two of the doors do not fit properly anel need easing. (3) The'ventilators, of the new room need oiling ; the nois«>. they make ona windy day is almost intolerable. — I am, &c. , . , "Lancley Pope." On the motion of Mr Wood the secretary was instructed to have the doors, windows, and ventilators attended to. Mr Wood moved, in accordance with the recommendations of the Educational Institute — " That the mid-winter holidays extend from July 25th to August 4th." — Seconded by Mrs Ayson, and agreed to. F. M'Kay's account for 15a was passed for payment. Mrs Ayson moved — " That the secretary write to the Education Board re the frequent changes in school books, saying that the committee considered the frequent changes that were made at present very undesirable." Mrs Ayson said she thought one set of books was enough to have in any one year, but they were changed oftenerthan that at present. — Mr Fleming seconded the motion, which was supported by Messrs Mason and Wood, and carried.
