KAITANGATA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

. 4 The ordinary monthly meeting of the ICaitangata School Committee was held on Friday evening. There were present — Messrs Joseph Shoro (chairman), G. Bell, and W. H. Bavin. The Waitaki "Education Institute wrote enclosing copy of Major Steward's School Committee Elections Bill. —Consideration deferred. The head master reporter! that the number on roll was — boys, 165 ; girls, 113 ;— total, 303. Average attendance— boys, 136 ; girls, 115 ;— total, 251. Ho also rsported that the chairman of the Education Board had visited the school and residence that day, and in reference to his (the head teacher's) request for a fireplace in one of tho bedrooms, ho thought that tho application was a most reasonable one, but states that the matter never came before the 'board. Tho architect visited the school a fortnight ago, and he also .stated that he had not heard anything of the fireplace being wanted in a bedroom. He, however, pointed out to the teacher how one chimney could bo built so as to accommodate both a cookingrange and grate. The Chairman said a letter had been received from the secretary of tho Education Board stating that the board could not at present entertain tho application for new brick chimney, and he failed to see how the secretary cowld write in such a strain, •unless committees are to understand that Mr Pryde is the board. The following is the letter referred to : — "To clerk school committee, Kaitangata. " I have the honour to inform you that tho architect's report on the state of the closets at the Kaitangata School, and of the chimney at the residence, was laid before tho Education Board at its meeting to-day. "It was decided to proceed at onco with the erection of two new closets with four seats in each. "Regarding the residence, the architect reports that the cooking stove has been fitted up in a way that endangers the building. The woodwork has evidently been on fire, as the end of tho large board is burned. Further, the stove has been placed iii the room that was intended to be utilised as a scullery simply. Tho adjoining room with a fireplace was meant to be the kitchen, and for this room tho board will supply a range and fix it in position, on condition that the stove and fixings are either removed or made thoroughly secure from clangor by fire. Should your committoo decide to confinuo the stove, the architect must be perfectly satisfied with the arrangements adopted in connection with the fine bofoi'c the range will be supplied , nncl I may say that at present he is unacquainted with any plan by which complete immunity from danger by (ire can bo secured except by tho erection of a brick chimney, a proposal which the board cannot ontortain. The board, will hold tho committee responsible should any accident occur through tho stove while in its present state." Ifc was agreed to submit tho letter to tho chairman of tho Education Board for hi 3 perusal, and to inform the board that the stove will bo removed as soon as the range is fixed in pos'tion. Accounts from janitor (L 5) and J. Todd (7s fid) were passed for payment. Tho meeting then closed.
