KAITANGATA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the boi'ough council was held on Tuesday evening. There were present — Messrs W. M. Shore Itmayov), H. M'Farlane, G. Raynes, J. Robertson, W. M'Laren, D. Morrison, aud.Jos. Shore. Mr K. Lee, attorney for the Castle Hill Coal Co., wrote making application for a. license, for five yeans, to construct a tramwny from the bornucjti boundary along; Bembridge street to Bddystone street, and along Bddystone street from Bembridge' street to Berry street, there to connect with the Kaitangata Railway -and Coal Co. 'a line of railway. The tramway to be. made suitable for running Government rolling stock, and mode of haulage to be by locomotive.

Mr Loe, who appeared in support of his application, said it was very unfortunate for his company that through the very stringent clauses of the t( Private Tramways Act, 1882, the council were unable to give a lease for more than five years! A.nd should his application be granted, he would at the end of hia license have to trust to the honesty of the then councillors. for a renewal for a further term. He regretted very much indeed that his company could not apply for a 21 years' lease. They were prepared to construct the tramway on cither side of Eddystone street, and the rails would not be below level of streets. After a short deliberation by the councillors it was moved by Mr Robertson — "That the application be granted under the * Private Tramways Act, 1882,' and subject to its construction on east side of Eddystone street." — Seconded by Mr Morrison, and carried, Mr M'Farlane alone refraing from voting. Tuesday, 4th August, was fixed for special meeting of council to hear objections lodged against the tramway. The meeting then closed.
