The Chutha Leader. BALCLUTHA: FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 1881.
We hold over our leading matter, this week in order to make room for the very interesting explanation of Native affairs given at Wanganui by Mr Bryce, late Native Minister. We also give in this issue an address by tho Hon. the Colonial Treasurer, upon the Financial Affairs of the Colony, which will be read with much interest. As we shall take occasion to shew in future issues we decidedly differ from some of the hon. gentleman's statements, although all will admit the address is a very clear and able one. ♦ . All who are interested in finding, an outlet for the surplus produce of this country (and who are not ?) must feel indebted to Dr G. Eveleigh for the attention he ia, through our columns, calling to the state of the markets at the Cape. From his long residence in that Colony he is fully conversant with the subject of which he treats ; and no qne can read his communications without feeling that with a little exertion and enterprise on the part of our settlers they may secure ample prices for their produce. But it matters not that markets exist if each is to wait for another disbursing the preliminary expenses necessary to advantage being taken of these markets. We have frequently heard the merchants blamed for their want of enterprise in this matter. We. believe, however, that thvy really have but very little interest in it. It matters little to them whether a high or a low price is got for produce. It is the producers who are most interested and until they adopt united action to establish an export trade to such places as the Cape there is but very little prospect of improved prices. We have reason to believe, however, that a move in the proper direction will shortly be made, and if followed up energetically we have no doubt satisfactory results will follow.
