CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

[The following is the Engineer's report held over from last issue.] March 25th, 1880. Mr Chairman, Clutha County Council. Sir, — I have the honour to report that acccording to instructions I have inspected. Glenshee road at the crossing of Waikoikoi creek. The present formation on the north bank of the creek ia on the school reserve. In regard to a deviation from this road through sections 21 arid 20 to join the road passing Mr M'lntyre's place so that the settlers in Glenshee valley might avail themselves of the bridge to be built over the Waikoikoi creek on road passing Mr M'lntyre's, I found that neither the proprietor, through whose land the deviation would have to be taken, nor those it is intended to benefit are in favour of it. It would certainly add to the length of their road t<» Tapanui or the railway and be a daily hardship to their children who attend school. I would, therefore, recommend that a cutt ting on the Glenshee road be made on the .north side of the crossing. Estimated cost to make the approach fairly passable and put a light foot bridge over the creek, especially for the convenience, of children going to school, L 25. . la regard to the requirements of the Waipahi riding, which I was also to report upon, I may observe that the physical features of the country as well as deferred payment settlement has somewhat divided the riding into four divisions. The -first division I may describe "as containing blocks 3, 7, and 8, Greenvale Survey District, and blocks 1, 2, and 3, Glenkenich Survey District. The main outlet ior the aettler& on these blocks is by the Greenvale road — Waikaka to Kelso — as all the road-lines which intersect the above named blocks lead on. to this roadline. A portion of this road-line' from the Pomahaka river to the foot of Jenkin's ; hill, a distance of about 2£ miles, is very flat and gets very much cut up in the winter time. The settlers are quite agreed that the formation and gravelling of ■ this portion of the road is the most urgent work required in this division of the disti'ict, and are anxiouß that the Council should take it in hand as soon as possible. . The second division may be described as containing blocks 5, 6, 10, and part of 9, Glenkenich survey district. The most important work required in this division is a bridge over the Pomahaka river at I Captain Mackenzie's ford. , ■ When the Tapanui railway line is opened the main outlet for the settlers will be by the Wai-i koikoi road to the railway station atCapt. Mackenzie's ford., I may state, that portions of the Waikoikoi road are very flat, and until they be either gravelled or metalled will not carry the traffic that will be bri this road during the winter months. I may also, state that tee road- ; line leading from ; the Waikoikoi road to the deferred payment settlers on sections 36, 37, ani 38J, require to made passable, also a portion of Glenshee road,' and Wad passing sections 3, 20, 21, 22,' 18, 19, and,4,block 5. , .-•_;• r,. < ; The third division contains blocks 8, 9, 10, 12, and part of 7, Waipahi, survey district. The , main . outlets from * this division iB by the main road to Waipahi railway station and by roads leading to Arthurtoh station. ' Small ■ settlement is mostly confined to blocks. 9 and 10, and when the contract at present being carried ; out on road passing sthroug5 through '86013011 12, block 9yi.is completed ithe roads on, the north side of the railway will, be passable. |An application was made to the Council some time ago to make road-line f ori south side of the railway passing sections 1 ! 7, 1 18, ' and ; 19/ block 10) to Arthurtori 'railway; station* : The road line <is not jpassable.i I' understand that the Otaria Road Board jis making the continuation; of this road; from the boundary, of the Clutha County?
