DUNEDIN.

There were about 200 present at the meeting in Dunedin on Monday night. The Mayor presided. Amongst the telegrams read was one from the Mayor of Wellington, stating that the people there wore willing to assist. Among the donations he had received was the oiler of tho Spring Sold Coil Company to gi re Llo} ; LlO from Messrs Hogg and Eutton ; L'2s rroni Mr G. Cowie, as attorney for Bishop iSTovill. and L 5 5s from that gentleman himself ; LBO 9s collected by " the ring "; LIOO collected and forwarded on behalf of the givers by Mr Varley, with v melancholy pleasure as an impromptu but heartfelt expression of those who were on Sunday present at the theatre services," and expressive of his own belief that Otago would nobly respond, saying " the widows and orphans are our care"; L 5 5s from Mr George Darrell, who offered to place the services of his wife, self, and company at the Committee's disposal if it were determined to give a benefit performance, aud L 5 from Mr H. E. Nathan, of Christchurch. The following resolutions were passed: — " That this meeting desires to express its great sorrow for tlie dire calamity which has happened at the Kaitangata coal mine, and its deep sympathy with the bereaved families." " That subscriptions be invited from the public of New Zealand to a fund to be raised for the purpose of relieving the distressed widows aud orphans, and that the following gentlemen be a committee for that purpose :— His Worship the Mayor, Messrs R. The Mayor was appointed convener of the Committee ; Mr R. Olliver, treasurer ; Messrs J. L. Gillies and W. M. Hawkins, secretaries ; with power to obtain clerical assistance. A meeting of the Relief Committee was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. The Chairman reported the receipt of the following sums since the preceecling evening j— Mr T. W. Ken ton, L 25 ; Bank of iSew Zealand, LIOO : Mr Henry Tewsley, L3B ; Mr Robert Chapman,. LlO 10s; Mr J. Pierson, of Melbourne, L 5 ; Mr James Brown (Springbank, Dunedin), L 5 ; Bishop Moran, L 5 5s ; Mr Samuel McCarthy, L 5 ; Dr. Batchelor, Lo ss. A lettjr was read from Mr G. W. Connolly, secretary for the Prince of Wales Amateur Minstrel Troupe; offering the proceeds of two concerts under certain conditions. The Committee instructed the Secretary to acknowledge the receipt of all donations received up to the present time, with thanks ; and the consideration of the offers of Mr Geo. Darrell and Mr Connolly was deferred. The offer of assistance from Mr Dransfield, Majw of Wellington, ,was received with thanks. Mr Robert Wilson mentioned that the stewards of the Dunedin Jockey Club had subscribed L2OO, and had arranged for a special race on Saturday, the whole of the proceeds of which would go towards the fund. It was resolved that the joint secretaries be requested to obtain all information as to the means and circumstances of the families left destitute. Members of Committee were appointed to canvass the city for subscriptions. At Caversham and Lawrence meetings have also been held, and Committees appointed to collect subscriptions.
