PUBLIC WORKS AND IMMIGRATION ESTIMATES.

The totals of each department are : — Immigration, L 162,07 3; Public Works Department, L 17,611 13s 4d ; railways, L1,17G,500 ; surveys of new lines of railway, L 20,500 ; roads, L 106,612 8s lid ; land purchases (North Island), L 150,018 3s 6d ; waterworks on goldfields, L 52,850 5s ; telegraph extension, L 29,700 ; public buildings, L 241,305 ; miscellaneous public works, L 120,397 8s; charges and expenses of raising lbans, L 3,00 0; lighthouses, Llß,6OO— grand total, L 2,222,067 18s Bd, against L 2,229,374 9s 9d voted the previous year. The estimate for the Waitara-Patea line is L 55,000, constructions and land being L 52,823. Considerable sums are also set down for departmental expenses, for land, and for the construction of, other lines north and south. The amount set down for surveys of new lines in the North Island is L 6,000, and in the Middle Island L 14,500. For roads in Otago to open up land, L 6,000. The following are the principal items set down under the heading " land purchases North Island : " Opening up roads and constructing bridges through land recently purchased, L 15,000 ; purchase of land and expenses, L 130,618 3s 6d. Of the amount set down for waterworks on goldfields, L 2,850 go to the Thames for water races and L 50,000 to the Middle Island. The sum estimated for school buildings throughout the Colony is 1100,000. The vote for charges and expenses of raising loans authorised by the New Zealand Loans Acts 1876 and 1877 is L 30,000. For the introduction and location of immigrants L 157,000 is placed upon the Estimates ; the balance of the vote of L 162,000 being for departmental expenses, repairs to depots, and contingencies.

For surveys of new lines on the Middle Island — Engineer (nine months), L3OO ; travelling allowance (nine months), L 75 ; resident engineer (three months), L 125 ' commuted travelling allowance and expenses (three months), L 2 5; cadet (six months, at L 250), L 12 5; commuted travelling allowance and expenses, (six months at L 75), L 37 10s ; three assistant engineers (at L 75 each), L 225 ; cadets, L 25 0; commuted allowance, L 75 ; five surveyors (one at L 265, one at L 250, one at LBO, one at L 225, and one at L 313), L 1.133 ; miscellaneous expenses, Middle Island, L 11,149 10s.
