Sixty thousand troops are garrisoned in Paris at present. { It is estimated that American tourists will leave over L 4,000,000 in Europe this year. The two richest widows in California are Mrs Coleman and Mrs M'Donough. Tbeir combined wealth amounts to L 3,000,000. A singular anniversary is to be held at Pompeii next year — to celebrate the destruction of that city and Herculaneum 1800 years ago. A Mississippi paper suys that land can be bought in that State at ten cents an acre, but the people prefer whisky at fifteen cents a drink. America has sent over 400 missionaries to Turkey and spenc L 1,000,000, 000,000 in efforts to convert the Turks to Christ* ianity. Cardinal Manning, in a recent sermon, defined "society" as a " conspiracy of fools, fasshion, custom, mutual flattery, eating, drinking, and refined ! hardness of heart." ■ A labour war has broken out in I Washington, of all places, and one. life has been lost. It appears that the Government let a contract for the erection of a building lor the printing and engraving department, and the contractors, taking advantage of the times, employed labour at 60 cents per day, or 2s 6d British money. It was starvation rates, and the men who were employed were mobbed by those who were idle for working for such pay* A riot eusued, lasting several days. The mob stoned the police, who fired upon them and killea one man, wounding others. Fearing a renewal of the disturbance the police were served with Springfield rifles, ammunition was supplied, and Gatling guns shotted. A special police force was also employed. In this fashion is labour compelled to work for 2s 6d per day, between sunrise and sunset, in the capital of this Great Republic, " the refuge of the oppressed of all nationalities,". and. so forth, ' ' ..;-•'
