POSTAL SERVICE TO CATLINS.

The following communication ia published for the information of our Catlins readers, and we may mention we believe it ia the present intention of the Department to call for tenders for carrying the mail after the new year direct from the Waitepeka railway station to Oatlins River .with a branch runner from Puerua to Port Molyneux. General Post-office, Wellington, Sept. 2, 1878. Sir, — Adverting to your memorandum of the 27th July last, addressed to the Hon. Mr Macandrew, respecting a petition alleged to have been sent to this Department about six months ago by the residents in the South Molyneux and Catlins River Districts praying for an alteration in the arrangement of the Balclutha and Catlins River mail service, I am directed to inform you that the petition referred to made reference to another petition on postal matters "stated to be about to be forwarded by the settlers at Port Molyneux, the granting of which would prejudice the interests of the residents at Catlins and South Molyneux. Under these circumstances it was decided to defer taking any action on the petition referred to by you until the other petition came to hand, which, up to date, ii has not. I may add, however, that the matter has not been lost sight of, and it is the intention of the Department to consider the question of a direct service to Catlins River when dealing with the mail services for next year. — I am, <fee., W.
