EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
The Balclutha branch of the Educational Institute of Otago met in the school on Saturday, the 7th inst., at noon. Members present — Messrs M'Ewen (president), Grigor, Moore, Waddell, Christie, M'Kay, M<ColL Purvis, and M'Neur. The minutes of the former meeting were read and approved. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Stevens the usual paper for discussion was not forthcoming. Mr Waddell called the attention of the members to the important subject, of teachex's' salaries as affected by the regu'lalations now in force. He showed that the position of the country schoolmaster waa I now very seriously deteriorated, and pointed out the inevitable result — that the able and energetic men among them would seek employment in or near the chief centres of population. This has already been the result in the case of Mr Moore, who was about to leave the district for Kensington! He paid a well merited tribute to Mr Moore for his diligence and energy in the furtherance of educational and other social matters throughout the Olutha district. It was resolved — " That the members of this Association desire to record their appreciation of the valuable services of Mr W. J. Moore in the cause of education, and express their best wishes for his future welfare. " Mr Moore feelingly thanked the members for this kind expression of their regard and esteem. A committee consisting of the President and Messrs Grigor and Waddell was appointed to examine the subject of teachers' salaries, and report to next meeting. Rev. J. Waters, of Warepa, waa duly elected a member of the Institute. The meeting then ariinnrnnrj.
