TOWN COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Balclutha Town Council was held on Tuesday evening. The Mayor and all the Councillors were present. The minutes of several previous meetings were read and confirmed. The Clerk reported that he had arranged for the deputation re the siding at the Railway terminus, having an interview with his honor the Deputy Superintendent the following day at noon.A letter *vas read from Messrs Briscoe & Co., demanding immediate payment of the price of the weighbridge. The Town Clerk and some of the Councillors said a communication which had appeared in the ' Evening Star,' had been the occasion of Messrs Briscoe writing in the manner they did. Their representative had referred to the

article in the * Star' as the cause when Le visited Balclutha. After a conversation it was arranged that the deputation — to the Superintendent should see Messrs B'risco upon the subject and settle the matter. The following accounts were then passed : — Pay sheet— day's labor, £101 7s 7£ Inspector's salary 13 0 0 F. S. Canning — fee as valuator 10 0 0 Several small items were also passed. Councillor Mason on behalf of the Works Committee, reported that all the works for which drays were required had now been completed with the exception of the blinding of the metal on Hasborough road. The Inspector was instructed to have this done, and also to lay down the culvert for the drainage of the town, across Lanark-Street, near to " Campbell's corner."' The following were appointed presiding officers, and polling booths for the election of Mayor and Councillors : —

North Ward — A. Ross, Council Chambers.

East Ward — F. S. Canning, Canning's Balclutha Hotel.

South Ward — James Hogg', Barr's Hall.

Councillor Hogg proposed that 100 copies of the Citizens Roll be printed, and that the Council charge Gd. each for the same.

Seconded by Councillor Dunne, and carried.

Councillor Kilgour proposed that tenders be called for the printing, but there was no seconder.

A letter was read from Mr F. S. Canning, calling the attention of the Council to the fact that his name had been omitted from the Citizens Roll, although his rates were paid. From the conversation that ensued it appeared that it was from last year's roll Mr Canning's name had been omitted — that Mr McNeil, not Mr Canning, had paid the rates, and that Mr Canning had not applied to have his name placed upon the present roll. Councillor Hogg read tho clause of the Ordinance providing for such an application.

Mr Canning was proceeding to address his Worship, when — Councillor Hogg called bis Worship's attention to the fact that Mr Canning was not a Councillor, and had no right to speak at that table. There would be no end to the business if such conduct were tolerated..

Councillor Dunne said there was no such thing as a Citizens' Roll in existence. He defied any one to say there was, but they might as well play out the farce of the elections.

The meeting- then adjourned.
