THE SITUATION,
A caucus of Government supporters met on. Saturday, and deprecated the resignation of Ministers. There were 20 members present.
After the meeting, the Government notified to their supporters, who had requested them not to resign, that business could not be gone on with by them until the House had decided that there was no reason why a Crown grant for the Piako Swamp should not be issued.
Another caucus was held on Monday, when 89 members were present.' It was unanimously resolved that the Government should carry out the Piako arrangement by the issue of a Crown grant in due course.
Eleven others not present promised to support the resolution, and two or three others were expected to do so.
A meeting 1 of the Opposition members was held on Monday afternoon, to discuss the present position of affairs The party was not fully represented, only- comparatively few having 1 been requested to attend. It was decided that none of the land transactions, or similar ones, should be party qnestions.
A good deal of consternation is felt in "Wellington about the position of parties. The Government majority wants cohesion, and is far from enthusiastic. The Opposition, on ■ the contrary, is very enthusiastic and hopeful.
