Name of accused suppressed

PA Auckland A man charged with the shotgun murder of a man at Waiheke Island on Boxing Day was granted name suppression in the District Court at Auckland yesterday. The man, aged 38, did not plead to a charge of murdering Lee Douglas Williams, aged 29, of Auckland, who was holidaying at Onetangi. Defence counsel, Mr Allan Roberts, sought the suppression order on the grounds that the man’s relatives had yet to be told of the charge.

After hearing the application in chambers, Judge Pain said publication of the man’s name “could have a traumatic effect on three specific people.” He said the man had been arrested and held in custody less than 24 hours after the alleged murder had taken place and needed time to advise his family. The man was remanded in custody for a pre-depositions hearing in February. Interim name suppression was granted until January 3.
