Brass-rubbing plan launched

By

SUSAN COOK

Brass rubbing could become a big tourist activity in the Aorangi region if a project launched in Timaru and Ashburton by Mount Cook Marketing is successful. The consultant for the project, Mr Mike Adamson, said local councillors and information centre personnel responded well at the Ashburton launching. Plaques will be placed at 15 locations in the region, from Rakaia to Ashburton, through Mid Canterbury and the MacKenzie Country to Timaru in the south, and tourists will be encouraged to visit each location and collect a rubbing. Mr Adamson said “passports” being printed in Ashburton would have a section for each of the 60mm-square rubbings. The brass-rubbing kits will be available at sevenday outlets and information centres. Each kit includes passport, instructions and an imported crayon made of cobbler’s wax, designed especially for brass rubbing. Mr Adamson said two unemployed men in Timaru made the plaques, each of which depicted a special feature of its area.
