Socialist Party
Sir,—Towards the end of the great depression of the 1930 s a branch of the old Socialist Party of New Zealand (now the World Socialist Party) was formed here in Christchurch, and the party has maintained its presence here ever since. Because Christchurch has always been a respectably conservative town and the establishment has always been able to buy off troublesome rebels by giving them jobs and influence, few people have persisted with us. The point has been reached, however, where there is so much pain and confusion around that the party has to make itself more readily available to genuine inquirers before the greed for profit and the rapaciousness of its pursuers destroys what little is left of decency among us. We are pleased to do so. — Yours, etc., TED HICKS, member at large, World Socialist Party (New Zealand). December 12, 1989.
